IJburg Architecture

History

In 1965 architects van den Broek and Bakema developed the first plan of a city in the IJmeer. This new city should accommodate 350,000 people. In 1996 the municipality of Amsterdam wanted to build IJburg, however this was not without a struggle. The new-build project was a controversial project for which a referendum was held in 1997. The majority was against the construction of IJburg, however the number of votes were not high enough for the referendum to have effect.

Landscaped islands

IJburg consists of various artificial islands. In total seven. The build would be finished in 2012. This was not achieved due to various factors. The Council of State states in 2014 that the construction of new islands was prohibited, as a result of insufficient research into the consequences for the environment.
